Thirst No More
In John chapter 4, Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well that He had water that would quench her thirsty soul…
…whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. 1
Her reply was very telling… Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water. 2
Can you hear her exhaustion? An easier life with no more long hot journeys to a well where she had to draw and carry the weight of water on her back…who wouldn’t want that burden taken away?
When sin and shame meet grace and mercy,
But she misunderstood Jesus. He was not offering her an easy way out with magic water that would quench her physical thirst for the rest of her days on earth.
Instead He was offering her an invitation to fill her soul that was desperately searching in all the wrong places for love. This spiritual water Jesus offered her would last for all eternity.
John chapter 4 is one of my most favourite passages in the Bible. Where a shame-filled Samaritan woman meets a grace-filled Messiah and her life is transformed forever.
It’s a beautiful story of life and hope, where cultural and gender boundaries are dismissed and Jesus reaches out a hand of mercy to the least likely…as He has done for each of us.
Jesus fills the empty soul with eternal life.
Are you looking for an easier life, where the hard work of this earth is removed and taken away? Jesus never promised to do this for us.
Are you searching for the answer to the emptiness in your soul that is thirsty and crying out for life? Jesus is the Water of Life.
His invitation is an offer to you today. He does promise to save you from your brokenness, your emptiness and your sins if you surrender your heart to Him.
Jesus said: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. 3
Come, drink of Him…and thirst no more.
