In 1972 I entered the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and began my studies in the wonderful world of Political Science—the scientific study of governments, the philosophies and beliefs behind them, how they work, as well as their rise and fall.

And while all of that was interesting, I realized over the years that the heart of Political Science was actually the study of power and fear…the power to impose one’s will over others and creating fear to maintain that power.

It doesn’t matter what country, what place in time, or how honorable everything may have appeared in the beginning. Power and fear to one degree or another are part of the foundation for every government that has existed on this planet.

Fear often moves us to submit to others.

The question then becomes—Who do we bow down to? In my country individual rights often depend on which party is in power, and fear is used to keep that power. “Elect us. Only we can make America great again!” “No, elect us. They will destroy democracy!”

Similar claims can be heard around the world. And of course there are countries…even some who pretend to be “for the people”…that are ruled by dictators who have the power to create fear and take what they want.

Who do people see us bowing down to?

This can be difficult for a Christian, not because of what we see others doing, but because of what they see us doing. We are called to obey Jesus above all things, all others and all governments. For to love Him is to obey Him. ¹

And through our obedience, others will know we follow Jesus. ² Because they will see us—filled with compassion, gentleness, mercy and kindness—loving and encouraging each other. Not hating, judging or putting others down.

In the Bible bowing down is an act of respect, honor, obedience and worship. It is a display of loving the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. ³ As we enter the Christmas season, take an honest look at your life and answer…Who do you bow down to?
